How to Fix a Leak in an Air Compressor Tank

If your air compressor is not holding the adequate pressure, then check your compressor for a leak. Leaks are the source of wasted energy, wasting 20 to 30 percent of compressor output. A small leak in your air compressor tank can destroy the whole machinery. Leaks drop the pressure of your system, which causes air tools to work less efficiently. The main areas where leaks may develop in your compressor tank include the hose joints and a shut-off valve.

Instructions

  1. 1.Check all the air tools of your air compressor tank with an ultrasonic acoustic detector. Bring the Ultrasonic detector near the joints and connections of your air compressor tank. Press the start button of the detector. The detector will recognize the high frequency hissing sound associated with the air leak and will show a red light for a leak.
    1. 2.Tighten any leaking hose joints with the pliers. Then re-evaluate the compressor control system for leak with the ultrasonic acoustic detector. If a red light still appears, then replace the hose of your compressor tank.
    2. 3.Cut the hose part just above the old fitting. Place a new compression ring fitting just above the hose. Press the compression ring with the pliers.
    3. 4.Fit a wrench to the nut of the pressure valve. Rotate your wrench clockwise to release pressure from the valve.
    4. 5.Wrap Teflon tape around the threads of a new valve fitting. Fit a wrench to the nut of a new compression ring fitting. Rotate the wrench counter-clockwise to tighten the nut.
    5. 6.Bring the ultrasonic acoustic detector near the replaced fitting. Press start button. If a red light still appears, then replace the fitting again in the same way as before.
